Dr. Sharon Mates

Co-founder, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Intra-Cellular Therapies, which was recently acquired by J&J.
Dr. Sharon Mates was a co-founder of Intra-Cellular Therapies in May 2002 and was the Chairman of the board of directors and Chief Executive Officer of Intra-Cellular until April 2025 when the company was acquired by Johnson & Johnson.
Dr. Mates was the President and a board member of North American Vaccine Inc. and its predecessor companies. From 1989-98, she also founded several other biotechnology companies.
Dr. Mates is a Member of the Board of BIO and has served on and was chairman of the Board of the NY BIO. In the past she has also served on the Advisory Council of the Center for Society and Health at the Harvard School of Public Health, the Board of Visitors of the Biotechnology Institute of the University of Maryland, and the board of directors of Gilda’s Club of New York, now Red Door Community.
Earlier in her career, Dr. Mates was a research analyst, investment banker, and an advisor to the life sciences industry. She received her B.S. from the Ohio State University and her Ph.D. from the University of Washington and completed her postdoctoral fellowships at The Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard Medical School.
