Two years after I was diagnosed with ovarian cancer, I joined Red Door Community (then known as Gilda’s Club NYC) as a volunteer to support its fundraising efforts—before it was officially launched in 1995. I was in remission, holding tightly to the words of my oncologist: “You can go on now and live a full and long life.”
For over 22 years, I have had a front-row seat to the impact cancer has on patients and their families in my role as Executive Director of Program at Red Door Community. I have learned that every cancer experience is unique—and that our members are the true experts on this path.
We have seen that cancer affects far more than physical health. It reaches deep into emotional, psychological, social, and financial realms. For families, it brings uncertainty, emotional stress, shifting roles, and caregiving challenges. A diagnosis can disrupt daily life, relationships, and future plans—carving out a path marked by uncertainty, strength, hope, and resilience.
The support we offer at Red Door Community is essential in helping patients and their loved ones navigate the complexities of life with cancer, whatever the outcome. The importance of this work is evident in the faces of the people we support. Creating a space of comfort, connection, and healing brings purpose to every day. At the heart of our mission is community—a space where no one walks alone, and where every member feels seen, understood, and supported.
This work has been the most meaningful chapter of my life—each day offers the opportunity to make a real difference in someone’s cancer experience, and that is both humbling and deeply fulfilling.
I see this new blog, Community Connections, as an opportunity to empower individuals affected by cancer by offering trustworthy information, heartfelt stories, and practical resources that support them throughout the cancer continuum. We believe no one should face cancer alone!
