Headshot of Paru Radia, RDC Member and 2024 Gala Speaker

In February 2024, Paru was diagnosed with stage one breast cancer. This life-altering news left her shocked and uncertain, confronting a journey that would test every facet of her personal resilience. During her third chemotherapy cycle the symptoms became unbearable. As a single, self-made woman in New York, Paru had always tackled life’s challenges independently. But this battle required more than personal strength; she needed connection and support.

Paru took the vulnerable step of asking friends for help. Friends from Tokyo, London, New York, and beyond answered her call, providing the essential physical and emotional care she needed. These connections, along with fellow breast cancer patients, offered her the strength and insight that allowed her to feel less isolated during treatment.

After six cycles of chemotherapy, Paru underwent a double mastectomy and began reconstructive surgery. Now in remission but still undergoing chemotherapy, Paru’s perspective on life has sharpened. She has learned to cut out distractions and focus on what truly matters: healing, joy, deepening personal connections, and living a full life.

Born in London to immigrant parents, Paru built a distinguished career in corporate leadership and entrepreneurship before moving to New York in 2007. Throughout her treatment, she continued her work as an executive strategist and consultant, advising CEOs of biotech firms and other venture-backed startups as well as senior executives from companies such as Paramount, Planned Parenthood, Square, and King & Spalding.

Paru’s message for tonight’s attendees is clear: prioritize your mental, emotional, and physical health. In the face of a cancer diagnosis, focus on what you can control, and don’t hesitate to ask for help—many people want to support you if you let them. For those supporting someone with cancer, Paru encourages leaning into difficult conversations to ensure loved ones feel truly seen and understood. Show up for them in the ways that genuinely matter.
