“I’ve always felt confident in my understanding of how our unique community and program impact the cancer experience—but every so often, I witness something that deepens and expands that understanding.
I recently had the opportunity to participate in a new Red Door Community workshop, Pieces of Me: Collage Through Cancer, led by former RDC member Judith Elaine Halek. Entering the session without expectations, simply as an observer, allowed me to be fully present and open to the experience.
Judith’s thoughtful prompts invited participants to write and create collages centered on a moment when they felt trapped between unacceptable choices. Her compassionate guidance created a trusting and welcoming space where members could surrender to the process. As each participant shared their writing and explained the images that either reflected – or intentionally didn’t reflect – their stories, a powerful emotional journey unfolded.
What I witnessed was more than artistic expression; it was emotional healing. Through honest disclosure and attentive listening, members connected deeply with one another. This experience reaffirmed for me the transformative power of our community—a space where creativity, vulnerability, and connection intersect to support healing and growth.”
