The John Lennon Real Love Project is a free songwriting workshop offered to Red Door Community members through their partnership with the nonprofit Theatre Within. Inspired by the love John Lennon had for the art of songwriting, participants compose their very own songs to share with the group for creative feedback.
Songwriter, producer and teacher, Tony Conniff, guides the group, providing insight and feedback to help songwriters find their voice.
“I’ve worked with hundreds of songwriters and a lot of us have the same problem,” says Tony. “How to start or continue a song… we start to feel blocked.” Tony doesn’t love the term “writers block,” because he sees it as simply one’s own resistance to moving forward.
“The key to break through is just about being willing to write things that aren’t good, that don’t work out,” reveals Tony. “Think of yourself like a prospector digging for gold. You don’t expect the gold on the top of the earth. You’ve got to dig down.”
The workshop is for any RDC member who would like to try songwriting, whether they’ve written a song before or not. Songwriting can be a meaningful way to express thoughts and feelings, and sharing with others can bring a sense of joy and validation to the process.
As Lennon once said, “There’s nothing more fun than talking about your own songs.”
