Waiting rooms in cancer centers are filled with individuals and families at many stages of the cancer experience – including newly diagnosed, in treatment, and people managing a recurrence. Caregivers are there too – offering a ride, holding a hand, or simply showing up for someone they love. While medical teams focus on medical treatment, there is an emotional and deeply human side of cancer that requires additional support.

That’s where Red Door Community steps in.

On the front lines of this work is Nadia Reyes. As a Cancer Resource Specialist representing Red Door Community, Nadia meets patients and caregivers directly inside cancer centers throughout New York City. In each interaction, she shares relevant resources, educational materials, and introduces many to something they may not realize exists – a welcoming placet o find free support. This place is Red Door Community.

Traditional cancer treatment often focuses primarily on the body, yet cancer affects every aspect of life. Fear, isolation, and uncertainty can feel overwhelming, and many people are unsure where to turn for emotional support. Some assume support groups cost money, while others believe they must manage on their own. At times, people simply don’t know where to begin and searching for help can feel just as overwhelming as the emotions themselves.

Red Door Community breaks that cycle and removes those barriers. There are no fees and no insurance requirements to participate in our program – just a welcoming space for patients, caregivers, and those grieving loved ones. By being visibly present in cancer centers, Red Door Community ensures that people are aware of these resources at a critical time.

Nadia often observes the immediate relief that comes when someone learns about Red Door Community’s support options that are easily accessible and can meet their needs. Her work demonstrates the difference that information, and that first connection, can make in someone’s cancer experience.

We are deeply grateful to Nadia for her compassion, dedication, and the care she brings to every hospital hallway and waiting room. Her work strengthens the bridge between treatment and support, ensuring more individuals and families gain access to the support they need and deserve.

Red Door Community was founded on the belief that no one should face cancer alone. Through support groups, wellness workshops, expert speaker presentations, and social activities – all free of charge – individuals and families find not only resources but a community that understands if you or someone you love has been impacted by cancer, we invite you to learn more about Red Door Community and our support program. We are here to help.
