When Cancer Changes Your Relationship with Time

In an exclusive interview with PEOPLE last month, actor William Shatner reflected on how living with cancer has changed his perspective, sharing that if we allow the miracles of everyday life to pass us by, we risk losing the very joy of living. It’s a simple but profound reminder that our lives are shaped not only by the extraordinary moments, but by our ability to notice the more ordinary ones too. His words resonate because they speak to something we hear every day at Red Door Community: cancer is more than a diagnosis. It changes the way we experience time, relationships, priorities, and ourselves.

There is something fitting about Shatner offering this perspective. For decades, we watched him boldly go where no one had gone before, navigate impossible situations, argue cases in courtrooms, and portray characters who always seemed to find a way through uncertainty. On screen, he had a script, and the story would resolve before the credits rolled. But real life, of course, offers no such guarantees.

A cancer diagnosis often arrives with an overwhelming sense that life is suddenly out of our control. Treatment schedules disrupt routines. Medical terminology becomes part of everyday vernacular. Decisions that once felt straightforward can carry enormous weight. Whether someone is living with cancer, supporting a loved one, or grieving a loss, the experience can fundamentally reshape how they see the future.

Yet within that uncertainty, something else often emerges.

Many people describe cancer as an unexpected invitation to reevaluate what matters most. The diagnosis can prompt conversations that have been postponed, inspire people to pursue dreams they once deferred, or deepen appreciation for the everyday miracles of life and seemingly insignificant moments. It can also lead to difficult but profoundly honest questions: How do I want to spend my time? What does my life meaning? What legacy do I hope to leave?

For many, mortality is no longer an abstract concept. It becomes an undeniable reality. That realization is not easy, but it can also become transformative. When we accept the fragility of life, we often discover a greater capacity to live it fully. We discover resilience we never knew we had. We learn that while we cannot always control what happens to us, we can choose how we respond, who we lean on, and what we hold close.

At Red Door Community, we create space for these transformations. Our community exists because no one should face cancer alone. We provide more than a program – we provide a place where people can explore emotional, social, and existential questions that often accompany a cancer diagnosis. It is a place where fear can be expressed, where hope can be rediscovered, where life’s changing priorities can be discussed with others who understand. Healing is not limited to the body. It also happens through connection, shared experiences, laughter, and moments of quiet understanding that come from being truly seen and understood.

The transformations that occur within our community are not about returning to who someone was before cancer. They are about becoming someone with a deeper understanding of what matters most.

Cancer changes our relationship with time. It teaches us that life is finite, but it also reminds us that every day offers opportunities for connection, gratitude, compassion, and joy. If we let those moments slip by unnoticed, we risk missing the very essence of living.

At Red Door Community, we are privileged to walk beside individuals and families as they navigate this path. We cannot change a diagnosis, but together we can create a community where people find strength to accept their reality and embrace the small miracles that make life meaningful.
